How to Change a Flat Tire

It never ceases to amazing us here at Hall Nissan Chesapeake just how many people have no idea how to change a tire should they ever end up with a flat. One NBC News poll from 2016 found that 60% of people cannot change their own flat tire, and while that sounds bad, the good news is that many of those same people felt confident googling it and going from there.

So let's assume you have a flat tire, which was followed by a brief moment of panic and then a quick scroll through the internet. That internet search brought you here, and as your Nissan service center serving Hampton, VA, we are happy to oblige with a quick look at the steps you should take in changing your own flat tire:

  • Find a safe place to pull off the road.
  • Locate the spare tire, the tire iron, and the jack in the trunk of your Nissan car or SUV.
  • Loosen the lug nuts with the tire iron while it still is on the ground. They can be tough to get off, so be prepared to apply a good deal of pressure.
  • Place the jack in its intended position and lift the car off the ground high enough where the flat tire is no longer touching the road at all.
  • Replace the bum tire with your spare, then hand-tighten the lugs to keep it in place.
  • Lower the vehicle back down to the ground and remove the jack.
  • Use the tire iron to get those wheel lugs as tight as possible before driving away.
  • Drive to Hall Nissan Chesapeake as soon as reasonably possible so we can get a permanent wheel replacement installed and you can return to driving normally.

It really is as simple as that, but if you have any questions, never hesitate to contact our service department for help!
